Coming in we plow through thick fog with almost no visibility. A day marker leans on its side close to the mouth of the harbor, partially submerged and eery in the fog.
The harbor is charming, filled with working fishing boats loaded with crab pots and fishermen preparing for the upcoming season. Crescent City is a logging and fishing town and known as the tsunami capital of the US- having been hit by 31 tsunamis since 1931. There are boards everywhere talking about the tsunami history with photographs of the devastation in 1964 and 2011 tsunamis.
We plan on renting a car and driving to the redwoods for Paul and the girls’ first trip to see the ancient coastal giants. We also plan on visiting the marine store for parts….no doubt several times. We have a few projects to do but first we need to rest.
The coastline here is stunning, the rocks just offshore are wild and imposing. The lighthouse is at the end of a tidal causeway. The trees are majestic and the hush in the forest is so restful. This is the perfect landing place for our first ocean passage as a family…..
