We visited Mauna Loa Observatory (MLO) with Mark and Lisa from S/V En Passant on the north flank of Mauna Loa Volcano. The observatory is at an elevation of 3397 meters above sea level. We were able to hitch a ride to the top and then walked the long 8 miles back down. The elevation was high enough to get a pretty bad dose of elevation sickness. The views were spectacular, the air was chill, thin and refreshing and the observatories were lunar and futuristic.
