The complex geology in the Gulf of California in general is evident everywhere in converging lines of widely varied colored and textured stone, much of which look newly birthed. The coast is formed of high cliffs with stripes of blacks, blues, greens, purples, red (the predominant color), and all the beautiful shades of earth in between. The Sierra de la Gigantes mountains of the peninsula recede into the distance behind; sharply angled cones and slashes rather than undulations.
The steep sides of the sea cliffs look impossible to climb yet at the top of one, every so often, is a wooden cross looking out to sea. We have started scrambling up to these- sometimes repairing them or reinforcing the cairns that keep them upright. I am not sure if they are beacons, small acts of reverence, hope or remembrances. They do offer the promise of views and solace and clear evidence that the summit they occupy is attainable.
